Q:        How old should my dog be to start obedience classes?

A:        Large breeds may start at 12 weeks, small breeds at 16 weeks.  Any age up from

           there is permissible.

A 4 1/2 month old Caucausian Ovcharka and a 1 year old Chihuahua

Q:        Is there an age where a dog is too old to start classes?

A:        No.  Just remember that the older the dog, the longer the time period it has had to

develop the wrong habits.  It takes a little time to undo the undesired behavior and

then teach the new behaviors.   Have patience.  It can be done.

Q:        How many dogs are in a class?

A:        In the basic class, no more than 10 and usually with at least two instructors.  The

advanced classes are larger because all dogs have completed basic training and are

           already under control.

Q:        Do you take dogs for housebreaking?

A:        No, but we will be happy to give you tips for successful housebreaking.

Q:        Do you believe in crate training?

A:        Absolutely!  Dogs are den animals by nature and most dogs will grow to love their

crates.  It is a safe place for your dog when you are not home or cannot watch

them.  It is really no different than putting a baby in a playpen to keep it safe when

you are busy.  A crate is also instrumental in quickly housebreaking your pet.

Q:        Can only one person come to class to train the dog?

A:        No.  We believe the dog is a "family" member and therefore, any members of the

family that would like to watch the training are more than welcome.  We do ask that

you not bring young children unless they are supervised by someone other than the

           person training the dog.

Q:        Do you guarantee your training?

A:        Yes, if we actually do the training.  Remember that you will be the one training your

dog and practicing at home.  We will be your instructor.  The dog will only learn to

the level that you are willing to practice.  The more you work the dog, the better it

           will be.

Q:        Do you use treats for training?

A:        Not usually.  We are not opposed to treats when necessary, but we don't use them as a

general rule.  We would rather encourage and praise the dog for its reward whenever

           possible.

Q:        What type of collars do you use?

A:        We recommend "Gentle Leaders" for the family pet.  For those that are showing in

obedience, we may use the chain training collar as that is what they wear in the show

ring.  Gentle Leaders are nonabusive and are adjusted to fit your own dog.  They come

in sizes from petite to extra large.  We do have them available here for your

           convenience.
